The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has released a draft of the MI Healthy Climate Plan. EGLE Director Liesl Clark says, "This plan lays out a broad vision for fulfilling the governor’s fall 2020 commitment for Michigan to achieve 100% economy-wide carbon neutrality by mid Century." We know that walking and biking (including e-bikes) must play a major role in reducing transportation emissions. While they are briefly mentioned in the draft plan, there's no plan for how to increase the greenest of travel modes. We want to see a real commitment to prioritizing investments in safer biking and walking. We have submitted comments about this, which are now on our website. You can comment as well by emailing EGLE-ClimateSolutions@Michigan.gov (by February 14th) or by attending an online listening session on February 14th at 6pm. That session will have a focus on environmental justice. We should note that MDOT's draft 2045 State Long-Range Transportation Plan failed to mention the governor's commitment nor acknowledge MDOT's role in transportation emissions. MDOT did hear our comments on this. The final plan does talk about MI Healthy Climate Plan though it offers no strategies for reducing emissions. |
