Michigan Laws
The Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) referenced in this guide are mostly located in the Motor Vehicle Code.
Local Laws
Most local municipalities (including Detroit and Highland Park) have adopted the Michigan State Police Rules as local ordinances. Uniform Traffic Code (UTC)
City of Hamtramck
Hamtramck’s bicycle ordinances are outdated and it’s unclear whether they are enforceable. They prohibit and limit youth from bicycling on the road. There is also a mandatory bicycle registration for everyone.
City of Detroit
Detroit’s noise ordinance is limited to motor vehicles and is not applicable to bicycles. However, the city’s disorderly conduct ordinance [38-5-1] can be cited when a person makes noise that disturbs the peace of the neighborhood. Some bicycle pathways travel through residential areas where it would be courteous to lower bicycle sound system levels.
