Giving input given during project planning is the most effective way for the public to improve them for walking and biking. It gets much more difficult to make changes once a project is under construction.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created the Safe Streets for All federal program with $5 billion in grants over the next 5 years. The competitive grants support the U.S. DOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy and the goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roadways.

U.S. Department of Transportation announced their first year of grants and Detroit was among those selected. The city will receive $24.8 million that will focus on improving just over 31 miles roads in the high-injury network. 

The Canfield Pedestrian over the Lodge is now closed. It joins other recently closed pedestrian bridges such as Spruce Street bridge that's also over the Lodge. MDOT is unwilling to find funding to maintain them, and when they decay past the point of being safe, they can't find the funding to replace them. They are disconnecting communities at a time when the US DOT is calling for (and providing funding for) reconnecting communities. 

Most recently MDOT has said they would not replace the Spruce bridge. They made this decision without evaluating how this would affect the many bicyclists who rely on this safe connection between North Corktown and Midtown. 

We continue to lead on this issue at the city, state, and federal level.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy continues to work on their Southwest Greenway and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park. The greenway should open this spring and be another great addition to the three-peat #1 riverfront in the U.S.

The City of Detroit is also continuing their work along nearly all of the nearly 8 miles of rail corridor. This includes both construction as well as debris removal. 

The City of Hamtramck and Wayne County are still working on the Jos Campau cycletrack from Holbrook to Hamtramck Drive. Yes, there is a plan for addressing the cars parked in the cycletrack. 

Detroit City Council also passed a memorandum of understanding to create the Unified Greenway Partnership with Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership. This public-private partnership is forming to raise money for the greenway's construction and future operation.

The City of Detroit is inviting residents to attend in person public meetings to learn more about the Joe Louis Greenway Planning Study specific to their neighborhood and share thoughts on how it can benefit the community.
