The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is hosting a grand opening that closes the major gap in the East RiverWalk -- the Uniroyal Site. The free event is Saturday, October 21st from 10am until 2pm and begins with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Everyone is welcome, though you are asked to RSVP.
This new RiverWalk segment connects Mt. Elliott Park to Gabriel Richard Park and the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle. It's also part of both the bike and hike routes for the Iron Belle Trail as well as the Great Lakes Way. There's still more work to be done here, especially with the bicycling connection between Gabriel Richard and Belle Isle, something that should be improved with the Belle Isle Multimodal Mobility Study and its proposed two-way cycletrack on the bridge. So why is it called the Uniroyal site? We wrote this article about this along with its unique bicycling history. Lastly, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy's latest newsletter is now online and includes many other updates on their other projects and programming. |
