There are many projects near the Fort Street Bridge over the Rouge River in Southwest Detroit. This includes the bridge itself which the Michigan DOT is replacing, and the Marathon Petroleum Company’s Green Buffer.
Certainly the Fort Street Bridge provides a critical non-motorized connection in Southwest Detroit. It is a main connector between Detroit and Downriver as identified by the city’s non-motorized plan. It’s also a critical connection for:
- Adventure Cycling’s Underground Railroad Bicycle Route from Mobile, Alabama to Owen Sound, Ontario
- The Michigan Showcase Trail from Belle Isle to Wisconsin
- Proposed U.S. Bicycle Routes 25 and 30
Adding bicycle access to the nearby New International Trade Crossing brings an international importance to this connection.
For these reasons, we are collaborating with many other organizations to ensure this becomes a valuable hub for bicyclists, hikers, and kayakers.
A presentation on the FRoG project is available on-line.
