The City of Detroit has some of the most used, most loved trails in the state. The Detroit Riverfront has been voted the best in the U.S. three consecutive times. The Joe Louis Greenway is soon becoming one of the premier trails in the country and beyond. So why aren’t these included in the Michigan Trails magazine? According to its publisher, they can’t recommend these Detroit trails to their readers. “They will simply become more easy prey for Detroit’s criminals. I would be doing Detroit’s criminals a big favor sending more easy money their way.” However, trails in the City of Detroit have a long history of being safe, which is one reason why they are so popular. We would also note that a murder has occurred on a trail about 30 miles north of Detroit. That trail has remains in the magazine.
This trail network along Detroit’s Riverfront has many components, including the RiverWalk, Dequindre Cut, Mayor Dennis W. Archer Greenway and Southwest Greenway. It also includes the extensive East Jefferson, Lafayette, and Belle Isle bike lanes. These segments are in various stages of planning, construction, and expansion.
Our map shows what exists as of now. Enough is completed so that getting around this area by bicycle, scooter, or on foot is relatively straightforward for those of all ages and abilities.
Both the Joe Louis Greenway and Iron Belle Trail connect to this network, which open up possibilities for much longer trips.
